Autumn in Abruzzo part 3: Medieval towns

Santa Maria della Pietà,
Santa Maria della Pietà

Medieval small towns are sprawled around this region. But the best place to start is definitely Rocca Calascio : with an octagonal church and a castle ruin on mountain top, which give a spectacular 360 degrees views and hiking up is great experience. Then 2 towns worth mentioning are : 1. Castel Del Monte nominated as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and 2. Castelvecchio Calvisio, one of the most earthquake effected places I saw, but this  ghost like town has this ‘time stand still’ feel. The rustic stairs up to every small door way entrances to homes in the narrow lanes are very interesting. There is alot to discover in this region but these 3 are top picks from my trip.

  1. An absolutely beautiful part of the world. Your photos certainly do it justice! Let’s hope happier times will arrive for Castelvecchio Calvisio.
